Everything came to a head on this quiet Sunday afternoon May 22nd in Oneonta NY for the Spring Fling at Gilbert Lake State Park. In late spring and early summer 1994, a "Schneely" vibe overtook the Seapods. It's hard to describe with certainty what exactly this vibe was all about but it was seriously mutated and seriously persistent- like, so persistent that it's referenced in the lyrics on more than half the songs from this show. Negative Man was in attendance, he witnessed the mutation with his own eyes. This is a tremendous recording by GLR with all instruments and vocal channels crisp and clear. Moon Boot Lover and moe. played the first sets of the day with the Seapods closing the festivities. New songs like "Blackberry Brandy" and "Wednesday Afternoon" were sprung on unsuspecting crowds like hot buckets of water. And the Seapods mixed in some old classics as well. The entire afternoon was a freak fest. People were shirtless, wearing masks, a guy broke his leg (seriously, that was a cluster F-), the bands were doing shots, and all Negative Man remembers about the last half of the Seapods set is a large crowd of mutants doing aerobics by the side of the stage in unison while Max and Dana told the tale of Abraham Unleavenedhead. There was also an insane multi-band version of "Freebird" in the encore slot. Yup, this is a must listen bootleg. Because nothing like it ever happened again in Seapods history.
All in all, a great listen from an important time in Seapods history as the jamming got tighter and the Grunge Mansion (the band’s house) got more disgusting by the day. When you listen to this show, picture a gorgeous spring day in the Catskills, 3 great bands, and a serious mutation while you sip on a cold Genesee Cream Ale. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.
